Marburg, Germany | 2006 – 2007

Through BCA, a study abroad program affiliated with several colleges overseas, I was able to spend two semesters in Marburg, Germany. Marburg is an old town that remained virtually untouched throughout WWII. When you think of Germany, this is undoubtedly the place that pops into your mind. It’s a beautiful city that I am so glad to have been able to call my home for a year. I met so many wonderful people there who were a blast to travel with.

Prague, Czech Republic | Apr. 2006

This was my first foray into Eastern Europe. The train ride we took from Marburg to Prague was just as exciting as the actual time we spent in Prague. We took the cheapest route, which meant switching trains about a hundred times and involved having to take a bus across the German/Czech border. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into, but I’m glad to have experienced it! Prague was a beautiful city.

Frankfurt, Germany | June 2006

I spent so much time in Frankfurt while I lived in Germany because it was only about an hour away by train so I’m really surprised I don’t have any photos of the city that don’t involve the World Cup! I’m no football fan, but since Germany was heading to the top, I had to participate in this “cultural event” by watching a match on the big screen in Frankfurt amidst thousands of crazed Germans. I’ve never experienced anything like this in my life and am so glad I did!

Eisenach, Germany | July 2006

Some of my favorite pictures from my time in Germany were taken in Eisenach at the Wartburg Castle. Although I’m not religious, Eisenach is known to be the place where Martin Luther translated the New Testament of the Bible into German.

Sababurg, Germany | July 2006

Jen, one of my closest American friends in Germany, was obsessed with Sleeping Beauty. Apparently the castle in the tale is modelled after castle Sababurg. Even though a lot of the castle has been destroyed, it still remains beautiful just as the lands surrounding it are, too.

Oslo, Norway | Sept. 2006

I don’t really know what prompted us to visit Oslo. If anything, it was probably a cheap fare we’d seen on Ryanair’s website. We flew out of Frankfurt/Hahn and ended up somewhere that wasn’t Oslo. The plane had to divert to another city due to heavy fog and we ended up having to take a bus to our destination. This took hours away from our time in the city, but it turned out to not be so bad. We had plenty of time to see a lot of things – one of my favorites being the Viking ship museum. I think the biggest surprise I had in Norway was that everything was SO EXPENSIVE! A personal pizza was practically the equivalent of $25.

Runkel, Germany | Oct. 2006

The last name of one of the American girls that I was in Germany with was Runkel. Her ancestors came over from this city so it was interesting to see a modern connection to such an old place. The weather wasn’t the best, but it added to the atmosphere. I really thought this place was interesting with it’s rocky tunnels and stairs leading up to a high tower that overlooked the city.

Berlin, Germany | Oct. 2006

When I studied abroad in Germany, I went with a program based in the US who worked with several colleges here and in Germany Several times a semester, the program director set up trips throughout Germany for us to go on and Berlin was one of them. I didn’t normally go along on these trips because I was off doing my own thing, but was very glad to have taken the opportunity to go. Berlin was one of my favorite cities in the country with just the right mix of old and new.

Budapest, Hungary | Nov. 2006

During one of the last few months of my time abroad, I visited Budapest with Darby, an American girl from my program and her friend. The two of them had studied abroad in Hungary a few years prior and after hearing them talk about how awesome it was, I had to go. We ended up going over my birthday, and even though the weather wasn’t ideal, I think it really added to the mystery of being in such a different place. These are some of my favorite photos from my entire time in Europe. I just wish my camera wouldn’t have crapped out when we were at the Fishermen’s Bastian (shown right). I’d go back to Budapest just to see this particular place again.
